What is a QR Code?
A QR code (Quick Response Code) is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information in a square pattern of black and white modules. It was developed in 1994 by the Japanese company Denso Wave for the automotive industry and has since become a universal standard for fast data transfer.
QR codes can store various types of data – from simple URLs and text to WiFi credentials and contact information. They can be scanned with any modern smartphone, typically directly through the camera app without additional software.
QR Code Types Overview
| Type | Usage | Example |
|---|---|---|
| URL | Redirect to websites | https://example.com |
| Text | Display any text | Welcome message |
| WiFi | Connect to WiFi network | Guest WiFi access |
| Open email with template | Contact email |
Error Correction Levels Explained
| Level | Recovery | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| L (Low) | ~7% of data | Small, simple QR codes |
| M (Medium) | ~15% of data | Standard, for most cases |
| Q (Quartile) | ~25% of data | With logo integration |
| H (High) | ~30% of data | Maximum security, harsh environments |

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a QR code?
- A QR code (Quick Response Code) is a two-dimensional barcode that can store information such as URLs, text, WiFi credentials, or contact data. It was developed in 1994 by the Japanese company Denso Wave and can be scanned with a smartphone camera.
- Is this QR code generator really free?
- Yes, our QR code generator is 100% free. There are no hidden costs, no registration, and no watermarks. All QR codes are generated directly in your browser.
- What types of QR codes can I create?
- You can create QR codes for URLs (websites), plain text, WiFi credentials, and email addresses (with subject and body). Each type encodes the data in the appropriate format.
- Can I add a logo to my QR code?
- Yes, you can upload your own logo and place it in the center of the QR code. We recommend setting the error correction to Q or H so the QR code remains scannable despite the logo.
- Which file format should I choose?
- PNG is suitable for most applications (web, social media). SVG is ideal for printing as it scales without loss. JPG is compressed and WebP offers the smallest file size with good quality.
- What do the error correction levels mean?
- Error correction allows reading the QR code even if it's partially damaged or obscured. Level L recovers 7%, M 15%, Q 25%, and H 30%. When using a logo, we recommend level Q or H.
- Is my data stored on a server?
- Static QR codes are generated entirely in your browser – no data is sent to a server. For dynamic QR codes, the target URL is stored on a server in the EU (Frankfurt) to enable the redirect service. No personal data such as name or email is collected.
- How large should I create the QR code?
- The optimal size depends on the use case. For digital use, 300-500px is sufficient. For printing, we recommend the SVG export as it can be printed at any size without loss. As a rule of thumb: The QR code should be printed at least 2x2 cm.
- Does the WiFi QR code work with all devices?
- WiFi QR codes work with most modern smartphones. iOS devices (from iOS 11) and Android devices automatically recognize WiFi QR codes through the camera app and offer a direct WiFi connection.
- Can I customize the colors of my QR code?
- Yes, you can individually customize the foreground color, background color, and corner color. Make sure the contrast between foreground and background is high enough so the QR code can be reliably scanned.
